Magic Jack Problems, User Error?

idiotWe get a lot of comments and email here about Magic Jack, and more specifically, the problems people are having with it.

What I find funny is that people are quick to assume the issue is with the Magic Jack itself. It can’t possibly be that they’ve downloaded every ‘e-card’ that some ‘anonymous’ friend sent them (that’s a virus, in case you didn’t know) or that they just have their systems configured incorrectly.

Nope, it has to be the unit itself. But understand, lots of people have had ZERO issues with the Magic Jack and it’s software, including me.

Could you receive a faulty unit? Of course you could. Could the software install fail? Of course it could. When you sell MILLIONS of units you are going to have a percentage of them fail. Not every hamburger McDonalds makes looks like the picture either, but most of us just slop the pickles back on top and eat our Big Macs. Right?

Magic Jack is designed to be cheap. Period. It’s not got the profit margin built in to offer 24 hours customer service hotlines like AT& T. You paid 50 bucks boys and girls. FOR A YEAR….

Think about that for a minute. Then think about your petty rants before you post them here.

  1. i would love the magic jack if i could figure out why my incoming calls are getting a busy signal. thats the only problem i have,but it’s a big one. i’m not really experienced with computers but i’m learning. i think it’s something to do with the computer. i just bought a brand new compaq presario windows vista in feb 09. if any one can help or has had this problem please contact me. thank you cindy.

  2. I am a computer programer, and i ahve a “MJ” and I have not been able to get it to work right since about a month after i bought it. I have even talked to (well “chatted”) with the people at the MJ company and they could not figure out the problemeither, so I am sorry but I have to say it sux!

    I love it when people toss out a general term, hoping that it qualifies them as an expert in the eyes of all that read their comment.

    Just because you know a few things about a few things, it doesn’t automatically qualify you to say it sucks.

    Please clarify what your problems were, what you were experiencing, and what exactly you worked on with the magicjack customer service.

    Then, we might qualify your comment as valid.

    Just saying that it sucks smells troll like….

  4. Having lots of problems with magicjack . when I am working on something else their popup comercial blocks part of my screen making it impossible to work. Then i try to make an out of state calls I get a busy signal. and I try thd solutions thet offer I get all kind of offers of a free trial. Heck I already bought the damn thing, They need to put a complete set of instructions step by step in our emails instead of confusing the hell out of us. Ernest Co,e

  5. I bought 10 magicjack last month, and they are perfect and no problem at all. Besides, you safe thousand bucks evey year compare to others on the market right now. I recommed friend to buy this product. ..:)

  6. I bought Magic Jack and I’m very pleased. At first, I thought I had a problem with voice breaking up, but it turned out to be the phone I was using. I’m using FIOS and wireless to the tower and quality is as good as any phone I’ve ever used. I do not expect people to call me back as there will be a long distance charge for them if they don’t have Magic Jack. One bad thing is that I have an Alabama number and most people think it is a telemarketer. I believe that by listening to many people who have bought units and are unsatisfied , that many are not computer savvy…and one should at least know the basics. So far, a fabulous device for what I need.
    They do not offer a listing for magic jack owners…and privacy is maintained.
    Probably better to buy locally than through the internet.

  9. Bought two and they work fine. Sent one to a family member to use in Japan and he has called us in New York many times with again no problems.

  10. Don’t be so quick to think that Magic Jack is not a rip-off. I am currently in dispute with the company by way of complaint with the BBB of Southeast Florida. My charge? That Magic Jack did intentionally and without my authorization charge my debit card (which I was told they no longer do!) for the full purchase price to be withdrawn TWO days after I looked into their “free 30 day trial”. Finding contact information on these people is like pulling teeth. You can’t find it, or I should say, they hide it well for I did eventually discover all the contact information necessary to file a complaint against them. This started out as a venture to uncover the hidden cost of the product (as their service is not available in my area, I have no reason to want one). The main problem is that the website is poorly laid out and they don’t tell you what the “free” trial will cost until AFTER you have entered your information not BEFORE as it should be. I am spreading the word of the illegal practices of this company and it’s false claims. Don’t be sucked in! Do a search on Magic Jack complaints before contacting these people and, perhaps, getting yourself into a situation that can only bring you grief.

  11. My Magic Jack works as advertized but everyone I talk to tells me that the sound quality is terrible on the receiving end. I hear them crystal clearly. Does anyone have a solution to that problem?

I have had the MagicJack for 5 days now and it worked fantastically for 2 days. however it isn’t working now and I have 3 days of working with countless agents to fix the situation and my patience is running a bit thin, but I will continue to work with them until the issue is fixed. I just hope it happens soon because I have only had 40% up time since I bought it…

  13. A suggestion for anyone with sound quality issues. If you can hear them perfectly, but they are having issues hearing you, Echoes, garbled, etc. try lowering your microphone volume levels.

    Menu – Volume/Headset controls.

    I just received my Magic Jack this week and am using Windows Vista on a Dell XPS laptop with Cable Internet connection.

    I have had a few issues of frustration, but quickly learned it was user error!

    I would suggest you having SOME computer knowledge before attempting to use Magic Jack.

    If you are a college student such as myself, this is excellent!

    Also remember you are not on a dedicated land line – you are on the internet, speeds vary at certain times, so your service will vary some also. But for the most part you should have no issues.

  14. I have the mj and have been using it for about a month now. Overall I am totally satisfied with the mj. I have a couple of issues that I see other people have written about which I have solved. First, the popup that starts when the computer is turned on – the fix is to turn on the computer and walk away for about 10 min, come back and minimize the popup and that no longer is a problem. Second, when I am downloading software to my computer I do not have a clear connection – the fix is to do my computer maintenance and upgrades when I am not on the phone. Third, I had one occurance of not being able to connect to the website to stop forwarding calls to my cell phone – I chatted online with a rep that also experienced the same problem and his fix was to try another browser – That was the wrong fix and after a while the site was back up and I could change the call forwarding. I have found that in my case, the problems I have experienced have generally been because of my lack of patience and not fully understanding that mj is a great bargain for the price and is not designed to be a telephone company with lots of extra staff and additional cost to support that staff being passed on to me.

  15. i just bought the majic jack from circuit city. I was reading a lot of comments and complaints about unauthorized charges /scam from this company and whatever. i paid with a credit card at this store, and im wondering if majic jack (if they do have unauthorized charges) would be able to pull my information from the store.
    Also, i just installed it and it took me about 10 mins. it will only work with the firewall off even with exeptions thought. but so far so good.

    Well see how it goes.

  16. My wife bought the MJ sice it was a hell of a lot cheaper than adding digital phone to our cable package. This little thing is AWESOME! I have made calls from it, and also been on the calling end calling my wife and the voice quality is crystal clear. I havent had one problem with busy signals or incomplete calls (unless you count the one time my wife shut down the computer and calls would go straight to voicemail). This little device does the EXACT same thing that my cable company does with their digital phone service, but it doesnt cost me an extra $30 a month. We bought this at a store (walgreens I believe) so MJ didnt really have any of our info, but we also paid the discounted 5 yr plan when we setup the MJ, other than the charge we authorized (for the 5 years prepaid), no other “surprise” charges have shown up. Between the device and the extra payment for 5 years of service, I paid a little over $100 to have my phone service for a total of 6 years….. that would have only been 3 months with my cable company! Now if only I could find a MJ add-in for media center I would be set (since the device is now connected to a dedicated HTPC).

  17. Initially had problems with unit bought at walmart, it seemed to be an open unit when I purchased it, didnt realize till i got it home and it didnt work. Eventually decided to try again, picked up one at radio shack. If you buy it locally YOU MUST upgrade it because it’s been sitting on a shelf while the web has moved on. No problems after upgrade initially.
    Unfortunately now I cant call the main number I got it for, seems to be a problem linked to the phone company my mom uses. Cant call her, cant call Etex coop’s offices. Etex apparently upgraded their wireless service and somehow messed up my magicjack’s ability to call my mom. I agree with a previous comment. Customer chat can be a bit frustrating in today’s “I want it NOW era,” but I’m trying to be patient while they work on it, just a bit hard to trust that someone is actually doing something with no eta on a fix and only a faceless chat to deal with takes a little getting used to. As the early post mentioned, patience is a virtue, just hope they can fix the issue or may have to return it since this is the main number I need to call. (Especially on Mother’s Day)
