Does DSL Work with MJ?

Does DSL Work with MJ?

It’s a loaded question, but one that needs to be covered.

First, let’s cover cable connections. Obviously, a cable Internet connection should, I repeat, should allow you to use the magicJack with your computer. Now there are other factors involved, including some pertaining to your individual computer. But overall, your computer and a cable Internet connection should allow you to use the magicJack well.

Next, DSL connections. One of the main reasons most people by the magicJack is to get rid of their regular phone line. Now if this is the case for you, you cannot use the magicJack with your connection. This should be a no-brainer and apparent to anyone with half a brain. But, you may not have stopped to think about it. Your DSL connection works via your phone line. So if your plan is to get rid of your phone line, you may inadvertently be throwing away your Internet connection as well.

DSL only connections do in fact exist. So if you have a DSL only connection, magicJack might in fact be a solution for you. If you are in doubt, call your DSL provider and ask the question directly.

As for dial-up Internet connections, your plain old out of luck. The magicJack requires more bandwidth than what the regular dial-up Internet connection provides. In layman’s terms, it cannot send the packets fast enough to keep up with a regular conversation. MagicJack will not work with a dial-up Internet connection.

What about multiple connections, and multiple magicJack’s? The answer is I don’t know. I haven’t personally tried multiple magicJack soliciting DSL or cable Internet connection. So I can’t honestly give you any type of review in this regard. If any of our readers have any experience in this area, please help us out by posting your comments below.

By the way, one of my readers on another post comments that he thinks I work for Skype or one of the other VoIP companies. Understand, I built this blog to post honest reviews for the magicJack and other VoIP solutions. I am an Internet marketer and website developer. I do try to make money with every website I build. And as you can see, this website is no exception. It’s monetized with banner ads and Google adsense.

But I resent being called a troll, because I worked so hard to make this site nonpartisan and middle-of-the-road. So I may say it again here just to make it clear.

I am not a magicJack employee nor do I work for their company or any of their subsidiaries. MagicJack is not paying me to maintain this website or for any of my opinions. The same can be said for Skype, Vonage, packet 8, or any other VoIP company.

Now, I feel better. :-)

  1. Interesting, just tried to resolve some issues with ATT billing yesterday and get the offer to move the land line (main phone number ) and bill all together with the numerous cell numbers…..
they mentioned getting dsl at 19 a month, (while currently we pay about 40 + a month with add on features etc…..

quickly we discussed whether it would take different equipment for the house phone and answering machine…… no good answer…. and the question on using the VOIP for phones was discussed as well.

Its certainly a nice concept, but the multiples of billing entities to get you where you need to go is frustrating.

VOIP if you have a cable network ISP is another option as well.

Perhaps it is a concept that may grow and be useful for some of us who keep checking back month after month to find a better way.
Hope someone can map it out to save a lot of us a lot of $.
I advised the ATT folks that it seems it would make more sense for me to just put a cell phone at the house which has the main number. Currently it is only used to let our credit card harassers call.

First fix our own inability to get paid, next trim costs..( why this concept is attractive) then fix the debt stream later. (can’t fix what you have no dollars to repair or resolve)

It is still a matter of benefit, over the burden of cost.

    have a great day

  2. I’ve used it for about 18 months, and it saves me over $600 last year….magicjack is great….Because of this i invested in the company that owns it……….check out their stock (CALL) trading at high volume on the nasdaq and making me some big profits

  3. I have dsl with ATT. I pay $38.00 an month. If I get magicjack do I still have to pay ATT DSL $38.00 every month, plus magic?
