MagicJack in Mexico
This is my site Written by admin on April 9, 2009 – 2:28 pm

mexico-magicYup, you heard it right, we’re living down south of the border now. I’m pinging in from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon Mexico while writing this.

So what a great time to test the Magicjack, right?

I’m going to be doing some serious testing while we’re down here, though I haven’t even plugged it in yet. Reason being, I only have one hard line phone right now, and it’s plugged into our Mexican hardline phone number.

It will be interesting to see how magicjack performs on the international level. So I’ll keep you posted.

And if you are using magicjack in another country, be sure and post your experiences here in our comments below. Praise or complaints, we want to bring your stories to everyone considering purchasing the product.

As for me, I’ll keep you posted on how well the magicjack works down here, south of the border…. :)

  1. Congratulations on your move to Mexico. I have been visiting Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca for years and have family here. I am on an extended visit and would be most appreciative if you could share your “Magic Jack” experiences as I would entertain using it. I am on a MexTel connection and the internet is actually pretty good. I am a former LINGO customer and liked that when I lived in Hawaii. SKYPE works in most cases here so…???…I wonder if VOIP will as well. I will keep you posted if you wish…

  2. To be honest, I’m still using Skype for the everyday stuff. I have to buy a regular phone so that I can test the magicjack, which I have not done.

I’ll try to get down to walmart or sams club later this week and pick one up.

  3. Thanks for the reply. I have made inquiries into the SKYPE TO GO option where they will provide me with a phone number that can be reached by regular phone from most places….? So far the skype connection has been, at best usable. Have you found any VOIP options that are Mexico based. Hope I am not being a bore with all of these questions. So far, down here no signs of illness…how about there?

  4. Very happy with my Magic Jack. I bought it last year and have used it here in the USA with no problems. Main reason I bought it was for using in in my travels down to Mexico. I was just in Guadalajara and it worked wonderfully. Two of my Mexican friends asked me to get them one so they can call their loved ones here in the states. Before my next trip I will be buying more for my friends down there. Very happy with their service.

  5. I have used the Magic Jack for several years to communicate with my father and family in Central America with no problems. Skype is great, as it offers video, but very unreliable. My father never liked Skype. With the Magic Jack we can make and receive calls to and from the US (being in other countries), as it provides a local US number.

  6. I sent a MJ to my niece in France and set her up on a local number close to where I live in BC. The first time I called my brother in-law answered. It sounded like I was calling him accross the street.

Their customer service really sucks though. You don’t get to speak to a live person rather you have to click on a link (if you can find it) then type to a live representative. This is very time consuming for the customer to try to get their point accross when speaking it is quicker. The link to speak to a live rep is well hidden. It is not displayed on the front page of their website. You have to dig around clicking away to find the link. Negative customer service for this.

I also hate their “negative automatic billing” tactics which puts the onus on you to know that whenever you give them your credit card number your so-called account is set for automatic payment the following year unless you go back into your account information and see this.

I just tried to pay for another year and the website said “use another card” indicating my visa was declined. I re-tried and the same results. I call visa to see whats up as my balance is zero. They say MJ had authorized the purchase 3 times! They provided me with reference numbers to prove this. I had to go through the painfull process to contact MJ online AGAIN to be told there were no purchases made through my MJ account. I flatly told them I don’t trust them given their previous history with me. I anticipate them to now say thanks for paying for another 3 years instead of providing a refund.

I had helped a friend get set up with a MJ as he did not have a credit card. He wanted a local BC number so I set him up with one and paid the $10 on my credit card. The following year MJ took money from my credit card to pay for his MJ renewal fee of $19 plus taxes and $10 for the number I paid for the previous year! I went through the painstaking process to type to a live person only to be told too bad, go collect from your friend!! He doesn’t even use it anymore. They blame me and my friend for not noticing they keep the credit card information on the account without informing you so they can extract money from it automatically. They don’t inform you of this in the beginning and set up new accounts with the auto-renewal activated. They are making it difficult to remain a customer.
